When you file a GEICO claim, GEICO's first job is to look at the damage, and it wants that inspection done before any repairs start. You can report the claim online, in the GEICO Mobile app, or on GEICO's claims line, (800) 841-3000. GEICO then inspects the car in person or reviews photos you upload, writes an estimate and pays the claim. Who fixes the car is up to you. GEICO says you can choose any repair shop; its Auto Repair Xpress network is one option, not a requirement.
This guide is independent and based on GEICO's own public pages. Fast Life Collisions is not affiliated with GEICO.
How do you report a claim to GEICO?
GEICO lists three ways in:
- Online, through the GEICO Claims Center on geico.com.
- In the app: the GEICO Mobile app.
- By phone, on GEICO's claims line, (800) 841-3000. GEICO says its claims representatives are available anytime.
GEICO's filing guide asks you to gather the names, contact details, insurance and vehicle information of everyone involved, and a copy of the accident report. Write down the claim number when you finish; the inspector, the shop and any rental counter will ask for it.
Claiming against another driver's insurer instead? Read your insurance or theirs first. The general steps are in how to file a car insurance claim.
How does GEICO inspect the damage?
GEICO's claims FAQ says that if you are using GEICO coverage for the damage, you should schedule an inspection with a GEICO Auto Damage Adjuster before any repairs begin. GEICO describes three ways that happens:
- You drive it in. If the car is safe to drive, GEICO says it will schedule a time for you to bring it in, usually within 24 hours. A Shop Representative evaluates the damage, and GEICO says the inspection usually takes about 30 minutes.
- An adjuster comes to the car. If it is not safe to drive, tell GEICO, and it says it will send an auto damage adjuster to wherever the car is.
- Easy Photo Estimate. In the app or on geico.com, pick Easy Photo Estimate as your estimate type and take the photos it asks for from several angles. GEICO also needs a photo of the title or registration to verify ownership. An auto damage adjuster reviews the photos, writes the estimate and emails you a copy. GEICO says it does not charge for this.
Each route ends with a written GEICO estimate. Keep your copy: the shop will compare it line by line with its own.
Photos and a quick walk-around only show visible damage; more can turn up once the shop takes the car apart. GEICO's instruction for that case is short: have your repair shop contact your auto adjuster. The extra amount is called a supplement, and why insurance and shop estimates differ explains how it gets approved.
Do you have to use a GEICO Auto Repair Xpress shop?
No. GEICO's claims page says you can choose any repair shop, and its after-accident page says that once the inspection is done, you can have the car repaired anywhere you wish.
GEICO Auto Repair Xpress® is GEICO's own network, which it describes as one-stop inspection, repair and rental. At a participating location, GEICO says a representative evaluates the damage, explains the estimate and expected repair time, works with the shop during the repair, keeps you updated, and reviews the finished work before you pick the car up. GEICO says it and the repair facility guarantee those repairs, in writing, for as long as you own the vehicle.
That guarantee belongs to the network. It covers Auto Repair Xpress repairs, not a shop you find on your own, so if you go elsewhere, ask that shop for its written warranty. Repair warranties explains what to look for, and preferred shops explained covers the trade-offs.
New York also limits when an insurer may point you to a shop at all, and what it owes you if you ask it to.
The full picture is in your right to choose a body shop, and our insurance claims page shows how claims work with other insurers.
Will GEICO pay for a rental car?
On your own GEICO policy, only if your coverage includes it. GEICO says that if you have rental reimbursement coverage, it will help set you up with a rental car while yours is being repaired. GEICO says you can reserve a rental on site with Enterprise Rent-A-Car at an Auto Repair Xpress location, but its Auto Repair Xpress page adds that you must have the appropriate coverage for GEICO to pay the rental charges.
When someone else caused the crash, GEICO's filing guide notes that the at-fault driver's insurance may cover a rental during your repair. Check your declarations page for rental coverage and its limits before you pick up a car, and see rental car coverage after an accident.
How does GEICO send the money?
GEICO's pages describe two patterns:
- Most claims. GEICO says it will usually send payment to you as soon as possible after the accident investigation is complete, digitally or by mail. The payment covers the repairs minus any deductible.
- Auto Repair Xpress. GEICO says it pays the shop directly.
After an Easy Photo Estimate, GEICO says the adjuster contacts you about payment options. If a shop asks you to sign a form sending GEICO's payment straight to it, read what you sign at the body shop first.
What deadlines does GEICO have to meet?
GEICO works under the same New York claim regulation as every other insurer licensed in the state, with limits on how long each step can take.
If one passes, ask the adjuster in writing why. What your insurance company is required to do has more.
What if you disagree with GEICO's estimate?
Often the disagreement is over damage nobody could see at the inspection. Have the shop send GEICO's adjuster a supplement with photos of what it found and the parts it needs, and ask the adjuster for a written answer on each item.
If you and GEICO still cannot agree on the dollar amount, look in your policy for an appraisal clause. Many auto policies have one: you and the insurer each hire an appraiser, and a neutral umpire settles what they cannot agree on. The appraisal clause walks through it. For a claim that is denied outright, see claim denied or lowballed.
If you believe GEICO is mishandling the claim, you can take it to the state.
GEICO claim dos and don'ts
Do
- Write down the claim number and your adjuster's name and direct line.
- Book GEICO's inspection, or upload your Easy Photo Estimate photos, before any repair work starts.
- Take your own photos of the damage before the car is moved or fixed.
- Ask for a copy of GEICO's estimate and check it for the right-to-choose notice.
- Tell GEICO in writing which shop you picked.
Don’t
- Don't start repairs before GEICO has seen the damage, if GEICO coverage is paying.
- Don't assume you need an Auto Repair Xpress shop. It is optional.
- Don't pick up a rental before confirming your policy includes rental reimbursement.
- Don't sign a release while the shop is still finding damage.
Once the estimate is agreed, the repair follows the same steps at any shop. The collision repair page explains them.
Quick answers
Does GEICO have authorized repair shops?
GEICO's own network is called Auto Repair Xpress, and GEICO stands behind repairs done there for as long as you own the car. It is not your only option: GEICO says you can choose any repair shop, so a shop outside the network can fix the car on the same claim.
Does GEICO pay you or the body shop?
Usually you, unless the car goes to an Auto Repair Xpress location. GEICO says it normally sends the claim money to you, digitally or by mail, less your deductible, while in its Auto Repair Xpress program it pays the shop itself.
Can I use Easy Photo Estimate if the other driver is insured by GEICO?
Yes, according to GEICO's Easy Photo Estimate page. If you are claiming under someone else's GEICO policy, you open the claim on geico.com from a mobile device rather than in the app.
Should I be there when GEICO inspects my car?
GEICO's own filing guide recommends being present for the inspection so the damage is documented accurately. It is also your chance to point out damage the inspector might miss.
Need collision repair?
Call the shop to set up a free estimate, or stop by. We'll look at the car in person, tell you what it needs and help you through the claim.
