Bumper Repair in Yonkers, NY
Fast Life Collisions repairs and replaces bumpers in Yonkers: cracked covers, scuffs, pushed-in bumpers and broken mounting tabs. On newer cars the bumper also hides parking sensors, radar and cameras, so a bumper job often includes checking those systems.
What is behind a bumper
The painted part you see is the bumper cover, usually plastic. Behind it sit an energy absorber (foam or plastic), a metal reinforcement bar bolted to the structure, mounting brackets, and on many cars parking sensors, a radar unit for adaptive cruise or collision warning, cameras and wiring. A bumper that looks fine can still have a cracked bracket or a bent bar behind it, which is why the cover usually comes off for the estimate.
Can a plastic bumper be repaired?
Often, yes. Plastic bumper covers can be heated and reshaped, cracks can be plastic-welded or bonded from behind, and broken mounting tabs can sometimes be rebuilt. Whether repair is the right call depends on where the damage is and how much of it there is:
| Usually repaired | Usually replaced |
|---|---|
| Scuffs and scratches | Large tears or holes |
| Small cracks away from mounting points | Several broken mounting tabs |
| Dents that can be heated and reshaped | Damage around sensor mounts |
| Minor broken tabs that can be rebuilt | When the maker says not to repair |
The reinforcement bar and absorber are not repaired once they are deformed; they did their job and are replaced.
Parking sensors, radar and cameras
Sensors work through the bumper cover, so paint thickness, mounting angle and bracket position matter. After a bumper repair the systems are checked, and radar units in particular may need to be aimed or calibrated to the maker's specification. If a warning light or a "sensor blocked" message appears after any bumper work, have it checked before relying on the system. More: ADAS calibration after a collision.
Do
- Check that your parking sensors and backup camera work after a bump.
- Look under the bumper for hanging pieces or a pushed-in bar.
- Ask whether the estimate includes the parts behind the cover.
Don’t
- Zip-tie a hanging bumper and drive on the highway.
- Assume a "minor" bumper hit left the radar aimed correctly.
- Ignore a new dashboard warning after the impact.
Can I drive with a bad bumper?
A scuffed or lightly cracked bumper is usually safe to drive on for a short time. A bumper that is hanging, dragging, loose at one corner, or pushed into a tire or light is not: it can come off at speed or cut a tire. Also check that your headlights, taillights and parking sensors work, and that no warning lights came on after the hit.
Bumpers for Honda, Toyota, Nissan and every other make
We repair and replace bumpers on Honda Accord, Civic, CR-V and Pilot; Toyota Camry, RAV4, Corolla and Highlander; Nissan Altima and Rogue; and every other make. Many newer versions of these models carry parking sensors or radar in the bumper, so tell us the year and trim when you call, or send a photo of the damage and your VIN.
What does bumper repair cost?
The estimate depends on whether the cover is repaired or replaced, the price of a cover for your model, whether the parts behind it are damaged, how many sensors are mounted in it, whether calibration is needed, and how much painting and blending it takes to match the panels next to it.
How long does bumper repair usually take?
A scuffed cover repaired and painted is a shorter job than a replaced cover with sensors, because the new cover is painted and the systems are checked or calibrated afterward. Parts availability is the usual reason a bumper job takes longer than expected.
